Dealing With Difficult Remedy Reactions

AmyLansky.com Posted on March 8, 2013 by AmyLanskyMarch 8, 2013

While it is true that negative reactions to homeopathic remedies pale in comparison to the havoc sometimes wreaked by conventional medicines (disease caused by conventional drugs — also known as iatrogenic disease — is considered to be the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States), the medicinal energies of homeopathy, though dilute, can sometimes pose difficulties. It is therefore important to know the difference between “good” difficult reactions versus “bad” ones, and how to deal with them. For another discussion about remedy reactions, see my April 2012 newsletter or read chapter 8 of Impossible Cure.

The most important thing to remember if you believe you are having a difficult reaction to a remedy is: stop taking the remedy and call your homeopath. This is true whether the reaction is a good one or bad one. If you are experiencing discomfort that you feel has been caused by a remedy, your body does not need any more remedy stimulation at this time. Try to think of the action of a homeopathic remedy as an energetic nudge that sets a ball in motion. As long as the ball is still rolling, there is no need for further nudges.

(Please note that the discussion below pertains to the treatment of chronic, not acute disease.)

There are five basic types of troublesome reactions to remedies:

The “Good” Ones:

Aggravation of Existing Symptoms
This means that the remedy has definitely matched and resonated with you, but the dosing was probably just a little too aggressive. When you stop the remedy, the aggravation should pass (usually within a day or two, or at most a couple of weeks) and afterward, you will probably experience a noticeable improvement of your symptoms. During an aggravation, a patient will often feel better within themselves or show other general signs of improvement, despite the aggravated symptoms. Consult with your homeopath if an aggravation lasts for more than a week or is especially troublesome.

Return of Old Symptoms
This means that the remedy has lifted the outermost “layer” of your disease state and has now revealed previous layers. For example, your asthma symptoms may have improved but now you have eczema that you previously experienced years ago. This is an excellent development. Sometimes, the old symptoms will also disappear after a while. Or sometimes, further treatment of this previous layer will be needed. Be patient and consult with your homeopath.

Cleansing Reactions
These types of reactions involve the expulsion of disease energy from the body. Typical examples include: the development of skin rashes or itching, diarrhea, nasal discharge, or an acute illness such as a cold. Consult with your homeopath.

The “Bad” Ones:

All New Strange (But Not Severe) Symptoms Never Experienced Before
This can occur when a remedy is a partial, but pretty good match. This is especially true if you are otherwise improving, except for these few minor symptoms. The remedy will probably do you good, but has caused a minor “proving” — that is, you are developing symptoms that can be caused by the remedy substance. Discontinue taking the remedy for now. These symptoms should disappear within a few days.

All New and Severe Symptoms Never Experienced Before
This can occur when the remedy was incorrect and the potency was too high for you. Stop taking the remedy and consult with your homeopath. The reaction will likely dissipate over a few days. If not, your homeopath will probably recommend antidoting the remedy. Typical methods of antidoting include drinking coffee (a generally weak antidote) or inhaling strong vapors such as eucalyptus or menthol (which usually lessens and sometimes completely stops the aggravation). However, the best antidote is taking a better remedy. In my own experience, the correct remedy can antidote such a reaction within minutes or hours.

Why do troublesome reactions occur?

While there are some clues that can indicate a patient’s innate sensitivity to homeopathic remedies, in general, it is impossible for a homeopath to know in advance how a new patient will react to a particular remedy in a particular potency (remedy “strength”). Like everything in homeopathy, each patient is unique in their sensitivity. In my personal experience, some people even react best to specific potencies. For example, some people react positively to a 30c or 1M (which is the same as 1000c) dose, but cannot tolerate a 200c dose. Don’t forget, homeopathy is all about resonance to a remedy and potency, and it all depends on the unique energetic signature of the patient — which, unfortunately, cannot be measured.

That’s why formulaic approaches, where every patient is given the same fixed regimen, are generally not advisable. Of course, fixed regimens are de rigeur in conventional medicine, and using them certainly makes prescribing easier for the practitioner. But even allopathic doctors are beginning to learn that one size does not fit all. Tailored therapies for cancer, for example, are just beginning to come into vogue.

Classical homeopaths know well that the choice of a remedy must be tailored to the patient. But dosing management can be even more complex. Because it is logistically impossible for homeopaths to stay in constant contact with their patients, most practitioners develop dosing protocols that work just fine for most of their patients. That is why it is up to you, the patient, to contact your homeopath when a particular protocol does not work for your case.

So once again: When in doubt: stop taking a remedy and call your homeopath!

“Imagine Love” — Help Create A YouTube Meme for a Better World!

AmyLansky.com Posted on February 11, 2013 by AmyLanskyFebruary 11, 2013

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about John Lennon. Somehow, a few of his songs continue to touch the hearts of humanity in a way that few other artists have achieved. How many of us haven’t teared up, at least just a little, when listening to Imagine? With one small song, Lennon captured the inner hopes and dreams of all of humanity and created an image of a better world. I can’t listen to that song and not pause and think and feel.

Last November, my husband and I were visiting with friends and found ourselves discussing the impact of what John and Yoko were trying to do. In some ways, that impact is felt even moreso today than it was back in the 70s. Where are today’s John and Yokos? We need them so badly…

I was suddenly inspired with an idea. What if we created a viral “meme” of YouTubes that show the emotional impact of a few key Lennon songs? There are two songs that I think would be perfect: Imagine and Love. People could organize flash mobs that play one of these two songs, film people’s emotional reactions and post them on YouTube. Another idea is to do the same thing with a small group of friends and really focus in on people’s faces and emotions.

If this meme caught on, its impact on global consciousness might be extremely significant. A whole world would not only experience the emotional impact of hearing these songs, but see that emotion and vibration reflected in the eyes of other people all over the world.

In my October 2012 newsletter, I described the Aka Meditation, a technique that I developed to energetically connect the cells in one’s body. In my experience, performing this meditation creates a strong vibratory state that I think can be quite healing. Now consider how a global “Imagine-Love” meme on YouTube might create a global Aka web interconnecting millions of people focused on a state of hope and love. As I describe in Active Consciousness, scientific studies of psychic phenomena demonstrate that group efforts at focused consciousness are much more powerful than the mere sum of individual efforts. Imagine the impact of a global Aka net of “Imagine-Love”!

So here’s my proposal to you. On February 14, or really on any day, create your own YouTube of people’s reactions when they are listening to Imagine or Love. Make the title of your video “Imagine-Love YourLocation Date”. That way, people can look for other “Imagine-Love” YouTube’s more easily. And forward this newsletter to others! Let’s see what happens!

While you’re contemplating this, check out these YouTube’s and links I’ve already found of people creating flash mobs around Lennon or Beatle songs. They might inspire you.

LOVE

Love is real , real is love
Love is feeling, feeling love
Love is wanting to be loved

Love is touch, touch is love
Love is reaching, reaching love
Love is asking to be loved

Love is you
You and me
Love is knowing
we can be

Love is free, free is love
Love is living, living love
Love is needing to be loved

IMAGINE

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today…

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

2012-2013 — A Difficult Flu Season

AmyLansky.com Posted on February 11, 2013 by AmyLanskyFebruary 11, 2013

No doubt about it — this has been a difficult flu season, especially on the East Coast. Homeopaths have also been having some difficulty treating this year’s flu, possibly because there seem to be several different presenting pictures. There just might be several different flus going around, so a single set of genus epidemicus remedies has been hard to find. I’ve been trying to accumulate some data myself, so here are some of my results thus far. At the end of this article, I’ve included a short “materia medica” of common flu remedies that you can read up on to select the one that might be best for your family’s flu experiences.

As far as dosing goes, it is usually best to start with a 30c potency and keep using it if it is working. If a 30c works for a while and stops, then move up to a 200c. It is my own preference to give the initial dose dry, and give repeat doses in water. (See my article on water dosing.)

Here are some remedies that have been helping for certain distinct presentations:

Severe tiredness, especially if onset is slow, with thirstlessness:
Consider Gelsemium (typically the #1 flu remedy).

Intense bone aching/pain:
Consider Eupatorium.

Worse from any movement whatsover, with irritability and thirst:
Consider Bryonia.

Severe cough/bronchitis:
Consider Pertussin and Drosera.

Vomiting and stomach symptoms:
Consider Arsenicum and Veratrum.

Fast onset after exposure to cold wind or a fright:
Consider Aconite.

Other remedies that homeopaths have been using with some success are: Influenzinum (made from this year’s flu vaccine, it is useful as a prophylactic); Hepar Sulphuricum; Oscillococcinum.

Common Flu Remedies:

Gelsemium
The number one flu remedy (also the remedy that was curative for the 1918 flu epidemic). Totally weak and prostrate, almost paralytic weakness. Droopy eyes — can hardly keep them open. Legs weak and shaky. A slow onset. Flu might be preceded by worry over an upcoming event or task. Bursting headache beginning in the neck and back of head. Aching muscular pain. Thirstlessness. Chills up and down the spine. Better from fresh air and urinating.

Aconitum Napellus
Sudden onset of fever, with chilliness, anxiety and great restlessness. A remedy to consider after patient has been exposed to cold, dry weather or a fright.

Eupatorium Perfoliatum
Intense aching and painful limbs and back, bones feel like they were broken. Bursting headache. Dare not to move because of the pain. Shivering with chills in back. Chill begins 7-9:00AM. Eyeballs sore.

Arsenicum Album
Very anxious, restless, and thirsty. Fear of death, being left alone. Worse from midnight to 2am. Exhaustion after the slightest exertion.

Bryonia Alba
Very irritable. Very thirsty for cold drinks. Worse from any movement or noise. Pain from moving eyes. Wants to lie quite still and be left alone. Headaches and pain better from pressure. Can have great pain in the head when coughing.

Nux Vomica
Irritability and oversensitivity, especially to noise and light. Flu might be preceded by anger or indignation, or be precipitated by overwork. Very cold. Wants to stay under the covers. Desires warm drinks. Shivering. Headache from noise and light. Fatigue and collapse. May want to keep working even when sick. Stomach upset, gas, diarrhea.

Baptisia
Rapid onset. Sinks rapidly into stupid state. Dull red face; patient looks drugged and out of it. High temperature with red face. Drops asleep while answering questions. Gastric flu: sudden attacks of violent diarrhea and vomiting. Great prostration.

Rhus Toxicodendrum
Flu that comes on after cold wet weather. Aching and stiffness in joints, worse from first movement but better after continued movement. Restlessness. Better from warmth. Anxious and weepy.

Ferrum Phosphoricum
Good to consider when none of the other flu remedies match well. A mid-grade fever — 102-103F. Flushed face. Headache better from cold applications. Burning sensation in eyes. Stuffiness. Nose bleeds. Red swollen throat. Cough better at night. Sour burps, vomiting of undigested food. Aversion to meat and milk. Stiff neck. Restless and sleepless. Chill at 1pm. Worse from being touched or jarred.

The Magnetic Power of Consciousness

AmyLansky.com Posted on January 7, 2013 by AmyLanskyFebruary 17, 2015

In November 2012, I took my first-ever private retreat at Vajrapani Institute in the Santa Cruz mountains. For two days, I was by myself in my own little cabin, alone with my thoughts, my Self, my dreams. The institute is affiliated with the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, and the lay people who run it dedicate themselves towards the practice of serving others. Opening up the retreat center to visitors like me is part of their practice. They believe that by providing a vehicle for others to delve deep within, they are serving all of humanity. They even delivered delicious meals to me each day! It was an amazing experience, one that I intend to repeat in 2013.

While I was on my retreat, I spent a lot of time meditating. One book I used as part of this process is Sanaya Roman’s Soul Love. I can’t recommend Roman’s books highly enough. Over the years, and long before I became involved in meditation or metaphysical subjects, they have been life transforming for me.

As I mention in my book Active Consciousness, I use three of these books (Living With Joy, Personal Power Through Awareness, and Spiritual Growth) on a daily basis as part of a morning “divination” exercise. While still in bed, I choose one of these three books (based on an energetic/emotional sensation within me) and then focus on my coming day. I then ask for any message that might be useful for me and open to a page at random. I believe that this divination process utilizes the mechanism of synchronicity to bring a helpful “coincidence” to me — in this case, a useful message for that day. I have been doing this successfully for so many years now that it no longer surprises me that the message I receive is almost always completely apt and specific to the day at hand.

But for many years, Roman’s book Soul Love had somehow eluded me. It felt too advanced, too beyond my level of development. Its goal is to enhance the development of various qualities of Love within the Self. I finally felt ready for it about a year ago and am slowly making my way through its messages and exercises. And so I brought it to Vajrapani too.

One of the chapters in Soul Love talks about the magnetic quality of Love. As Roman writes, “As you radiate soul love, you are magnetic to the beauty and love within people and to all good things that the universe has to offer.” Once again, it’s really all about synchronicity. Our state of being — our inherent vibratory state — brings us, through the mechanism of synchronicity, people and experiences and dreams that match or fit us in some way. That’s because vibrations tends to “attract” things of like vibrations, bringing them together in space and time. We literally magnetize our future to us in some way.

As I was meditating on this very message, the miraculous occurred. It was mid-morning and I was sitting on the small deck of my little cabin, overlooking a beautiful sunlit copse of oak trees. I had managed to achieve a very deep and joyful state of meditative bliss, and was even feeling the loving presence of Lama Thubten Yeshe with me. Lama Yeshe, the founder of Vajrapani, was cremated only a few yards from my cabin, the location marked by a beautiful stupa dedicated to his memory. And as I sat in this rapt state of joy, the incredible happened.

Suddenly, I felt and heard a rapid vibration of air lightly touching my face. I opened my eyes, and much to my utter amazement, a hummingbird was hovering less than an inch from my nose. It was looking straight into my eyes.

Of course I startled a bit. The bird shifted slightly to my right, and then flew off. But I knew right away what had happened. I immediately thanked the bird and Lama Yeshe as tears welled up in my eyes.

My state of joyful and loving bliss, and perhaps my readings about the magnetic quality of Love too, had magnetized a hummingbird — an important Native American symbol of Love and Joy — to me. I had experienced a most profound synchronicity. I also took this visit from the hummingbird as a sign from Lama Yeshe. Although I am not a Buddhist and had never even heard of Lama Yeshe before my retreat, I felt I had developed a very loving connection with him during my stay at Vajrapani.

In Jamie Sams’ and David Carson’s book Medicine Cards, they write the following about Hummingbird as an animal symbol:

“If Hummingbird is your personal medicine, you love life and its joys. Your presence brings joy to others. You join people together in relationships which bring out the best in them. You know instinctively where beauty abides and, near or far, you journey to your ideal. You move comfortably within a beautiful environment and help others taste the succulent nectar of life.”

As we get off to a brand new year, may we all become more aware and enlivened by of the power of synchronicity in our lives. May we magnetize to ourselves, through our own unique and dynamic state of being, the joy and wonders of Love that are, in truth, manifest everywhere we look — from the dew on a blade of grass to the flap of a hummingbird’s wings. May we all co-create together a more beautiful world!

One Lesson of Newtown, CT that Few Are Talking About

AmyLansky.com Posted on January 7, 2013 by AmyLanskyApril 10, 2014

It wasn’t my original plan to start off 2013 with an article about something as difficult as the killings in Newtown, CT. But perhaps it is good to start off the year with a resolution for true change.

Needless to say, the most obvious lesson we can take away from the sad events in Newtown is the need for much stricter gun controls. For the first time in many years, it’s looking like this might actually happen. But I think the problems run much deeper than gun control.

The next layer that we must ultimately confront is how we deal with mental illness in the United States. I am deeply familiar with this issue, since my own brother is schizophrenic. The truth is, most schizophrenics are not violent; in fact, quite the opposite. But that doesn’t mean they don’t need our help. Sadly, the mass de-institutionalization programs of the 1980s under Reagan landed too many of these tortured souls on the street. And even if they are not homeless, most are definitely not monitored and helped as much as they could and should be.

The way the laws are now structured in the USA, it is virtually impossible to get proper care for mentally ill individuals who really do need some form of institutional care. In order for them to be held against their will, one has to prove that they are a “threat to themself or others,” and that isn’t often easy or even possible to do. Not by a long shot. The result is that the burden falls on families, who ultimately have very little control over their loved one. And the family’s lives often become tortured too. The result is often inevitable — the street or social isolation.

Why don’t we help our mentally ill citizens properly? Because it costs money. For example, in New York State, where my brother lives, if you do manage to get your loved one held for observation beyond an initial “observation period” of a few days (very difficult!), and if that person wants to stay under institutional care, the state ultimately has to foot the bill once the person’s funds run out. That’s something the government really doesn’t want to do. But it is something that does need to be done, and not just for those who are obviously dangerous to themselves or others.

As I write this, it is emerging that Adam Lanza’s mother was well aware that her son needed help and even some form of institutionalization. There should have been some societal mechanism, including counseling, that would have enabled her to help her son in a way that was safe for herself and for others.

But even our handling of the mentally ill is not the whole story. The sad truth is that more and more children may be growing up to be like Adam Lanza. One brave mother from Boise, Idaho shared a story about her own son, which appeared in my own San Francisco newspaper. Entitled “I Am Adam Lanza’s Mother”, Liza Long describes the violent rages of her now 13-year-old son and the need to lock her other children in the car to protect them.

Of course, it doesn’t help matters when kids these days (especially boys) are spending countless hours playing horribly realistic war-based video games. My husband and I did not allow these kinds of games in our own home, but I’ve seen how other children spend many hours each day playing them. Blend the violence of our society and entertainment with a whole generation of children, many of whom have become brain-damaged by — you guessed it — over-vaccination, and the results can be disastrous.

This is the lesson that almost no one is going to talk about or address: that one of the deep reasons for all these mass-shootings may be the American vaccination program. In a recent email sent out to his mailing list, chiropractor Tedd Koren points out that medical historian Harris Coulter predicted the current wave of violence we are now seeing in his eerily prescient 1990 book Vaccination, Social Violence, and Criminality. As Koren writes:

“The mechanism that [Coulter] discussed was brain damage known to be caused by vaccination: sub-acute encephalo-meningitis. This condition was known to cause inflammation of the base of the brain and to affect personality and behavior.

“Dr. Coulter, one of America’s premiere medical historians, did extensive research to show that encephalitis was an acknowledged medical reaction to nearly all vaccinations. A very mild form of this could cause serious personality distortions and disorders. A review of the ‘epidemics’ of infectious encephalitis which swept America and Europe in the 1920s reveals that those who survived such a condition would suffer from various conditions which we recognize today but were exceedingly rare at that time.

“These conditions include ADD, ADHD, autism, Asperger’s syndrome, allergies, anorexia, bulimia, impulsive violence, stuttering, mental retardation, dyslexia, sudden infant death syndrome (Crib death), processing disorders, the inability to feel empathy, bed-wetting, Tourette’s, seizures, … and many others. These conditions, it must be repeated, seemed to come out of nowhere (or rarely occurred) in those times.

“Coulter seemed especially concerned about the violence emanating from such diseased brains. His evaluation of prisoners revealed that a surprisingly high number suffered from various neurological disorders such as tics, stuttering, dyslexia and other conditions which were reflective of nervous system problems.”

Of course, most people with these problems are not violent. But, as pointed out in the newspaper article I cited, the only solution conventional medicine seems to offer for children who do suffer from rage are the same suppressive drugs used for schizophrenics like my brother. Besides having serious side-effects, these drugs often don’t work forever.

A better answer, of course, is homeopathy. It’s a time-tested way to correct vaccine damage. It also provides an alternative to vaccines as a way of dealing with childhood illnesses and the flu. The writings of homeopaths like the Reichenberg-Ullmans, in their book Rage Free Kids, add testimony to homeopathy’s ability to help children who have problems with rage and anger.

I often wonder what my brother’s life would have been like if my family knew about homeopathy when he started having problems at age 10. And who knows what might have happened if Adam Lanza’s mom sought out homeopathic treatment for her son when he first started having problems? I’m afraid we will never know. I just hope that our society can begin to learn all the lessons it can from this horrible tragedy, even the very uncomfortable or unpopular ones.

The Gift of Homeopathy — Worthwhile Projects to Support this Holiday Season

AmyLansky.com Posted on December 10, 2012 by AmyLanskyDecember 10, 2012

It’s that time of year again — when many of us are called to open our hearts and wallets and help others. One way you can do this is to support a worthwhile homeopathic charity. There are many homeopaths and organizations around the world that volunteer their time and skills to help others benefit from the miracle of homeopathy. Here are a few to consider if you are thinking about making a donation this holiday season.

Stemming the Tide of Disease in Africa

The Senya-Tamale Malaria Project
The Senya/Tamale Homeopathy Project was started in the summer of 2006 by my friend, Adjoa Margaret Stack, who traveled to Ghana, West Africa, to help combat the effects of malaria through homeopathic care. Adjoa is deeply familiar with Ghana, where she served in the Peace Corps many years ago. Over seven years, with the generous support of an extended network of family, friends, colleagues and many others, she has continued to operate two small clinics and expand into Ghanaian Primary Schools with Malaria prophylactic treatment. For the past two years, she has also been conducting a more formal study on the effectiveness of her prophylactic protocol.

The Amma Resonance Healing Foundation
The Amma Resonance Healing Foundation has been successfully using a remedy developed by homeopath Peter Chappell, called PC1, for treating HIV/AIDS in Africa. Clinics have been established in Kenya, Malawi, Burundi, the Congo, South Africa, Ghana, and Tanzania.

Homeopathy for Health in Africa
Homeopaths Jeremy and Camilla Sherr have treated 2000 HIV/AIDS patients in clinics all over the Kilimanjaro, Tanzania region. Patients report an increase in energy and well-being and an improvement in the side effects of anti-retroviral treatment. With homeopathy they also treat most opportunistic infections and help reduce the occurrence of malaria.

The Abha Light Foundation
The Abha Light Foundation provides low-cost medical care to Kenyans in their health centers at Kariobangi slum, Mathare slum and other clinics. Through homeopathy and natural medicine, they treat any type of disease that may be presented at the clinics. However about 15% or more of their cases are HIV-related. They have developed successful case management and treatment protocols in HIV, Malaria and TB.

Worthy American Homeopathic Organizations

National Center for Homeopathy
The National Center for Homeopathy is the “mother ship” of homeopathy in North America. It is an open-membership organization whose mission is to promote health through homeopathy. By providing general education to the public about homeopathy, specific education to homeopaths, and working with government agencies and the media, they help to make homeopathy understood and available throughout the United States.

Homeopaths Without Borders – North America
Homeopaths Without Borders offers both homeopathic treatment and education to foster independence in the use of homeopathic medicine. To date, they have provided service in Cuba, Honduras, El Salvador, Antigua, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Haiti.

Tending the Soul of the Earth

AmyLansky.com Posted on December 10, 2012 by AmyLanskyDecember 10, 2012

Recently I’ve become fascinated by a notion I’d like to explore much more in 2013 — our critical role in tending the soul of the Earth. The idea was brought to my attention at the 2012 Science and Nonduality (SAND) conference in San Rafael in October. In several of his talks, Sufi teacher Llewellyn Vaughn-Lee stressed something I had never really fully understood before: that the challenge of climate change is something that must be tackled not only on a physical level, but on a spiritual level as well.

It seems to me that December 2012 — the month that so many of us have been anticipating, with the end of the current Mayan calendar and the beginning of the next occurring on December 21, 2012 — is also a perfect time to consider this deep question of tending the soul of the Earth. It brings together several key points that I make in Active Consciousness :

  • All things possess an energy body, at least on the etheric level, and many living things have energy bodies on even higher levels.
  • The Earth can be viewed as a living organism (sometimes called Gaia).
  • As beings who have evolved as part of Earth, we are all elements of and in many ways inseparable from the larger “holon” of the Earth.
  • As above, so below; and as below, so above. What is happening on the physical level to planet Earth is also occurring on all levels.

At the SAND conference, Vaughn-Lee stressed that environmentalists have been missing this very key element in their battles to stem the tide of climate change: the role of the soul of the Earth. While it is clear that the body of the Earth is suffering and changing around us, and that we humans are a part of and even probably the primary cause of this change on a physical level, the soul of the Earth has also been crying and suffering as well. Indeed, what is cause and what is effect?

There was a time when humanity was exquisitely tuned into the magic and soul of the Earth. Every tree, every storm, every sowing and reaping of the harvest, was imbued with spiritual meaning. Native people understood their spiritual relationship with the animals and plants around them. We blessed, thanked, and asked forgiveness for our interactions with and intrusions upon our fellow Earthers, both animate and inanimate. We understood that a balance had to be kept.

With the coming of the enlightenment and the rise of science came materialism and the complete disenchantment of the Earth. Many of us may not have forgotten our own souls, but we have definitely forgotten about the souls of the Earth and our fellow creatures. We ‘thing’ed them. And as we know from the fields of war and humanity’s holocausts, when we ‘thing’ someone or something, we feel free to destroy it. It is soulless to us. It is no more than a machine. It is merely matter, not soul.

But just because we do this ‘thinging’ in our minds does not make it true. The Earth and everything in it does possess a soul. To help our Earth, we must not only heal its body, we must also heal it on an energetic or soul level. Just as energy medicines like homeopathy and acupuncture and Reiki tell us, it is actually on this energy level that true disease originates and where true healing must occur. In fact, after healing the energy level, physical healing usually follows. While healing the Earth on a physical level now seems almost insurmountable to us, leaving us in a state of despair and hopelessness, perhaps there is still hope for healing the soul of the Earth.

That’s where each of us comes in. Each of us is part of the Earth holon. By healing ourselves we may be able to heal the Earth. By re-enchanting the pieces, we can begin to re-enchant the whole. You can start today in your own home, in your own backyard, in your own neighborhood. Bless your food. Talk to your plant. Thank your tree and hug it. Feel the energy of your flower garden and commune with it. Sense the soul of your street and send healing energy throughout your neighborhood. Sense the stresses and joys within your dwelling. Create a ceremony for the healing of your home energy. Tune into any intuitions about changes that may help ease tension or contraction.

If each of us heals the soul of the small space around us, the healing of the whole can begin. And who knows? If we tend to the healing of the soul of the Earth, the body of the Earth may begin to respond as well. As the Mayans predicted, a transformation for the better may be just around the corner.

Instead of Counting Off the Days, Make Every Day Count

AmyLansky.com Posted on November 6, 2012 by AmyLanskyNovember 6, 2012

Do you ever feel like you’re approaching each day as just another list of things to get done? As you go through your calendar, do you ever feel like you’re counting off the days like a prisoner in a cell, making a mark on the wall for each day that goes by? Tick. Tick. Tick. I know that I sometimes feel this way. I bet you do too.

I’m a lap swimmer and I often approach my swim in the same way. I love swimming — the way my body feels in the pool and especially how invigorated I feel afterwards. Sometimes, though, I just spend my swim thinking about how many laps I’ve swum and how many are left to go. Other times, I distract myself by doing math in my head while swimming. Let me explain.

I’m what they call a “winter swimmer” at a beautiful country club only five minutes from my home. Instead of paying the exorbitant membership fee of this club, I pay a much lower fixed fee to swim in their gorgeous outdoor pool September through April. On some glorious days, I have the whole pool all to myself. My favorite “swim-math” is to divide the number of swims I’ve swum into the total cost of the winter swim fee. I find that this exercise motivates me to swim more often — the more I swim, the lower the cost per swim (OK, I guess I like a good deal!) Sometimes I also calculate how many miles I’ve swum so far this season. You get the idea.

But there are consequences to my “counting” in this way. Often, I’m so in my head and mathematical thoughts that I lose track of where I am in my swim program. Even worse, I’m not even noticing my body, the pool, or the process of swimming at all. Doing division in my head is certainly a way to distract myself from counting laps, but it is not a way to enjoy my swim! I used to be a mathematician and I can certainly attest to the fact that mathematics is probably one the most “head-y” of subjects, transporting you completely into your mind and out of your body sensations. It’s no wonder that mathematicians are perhaps the most rumpled of absent-minded professors.

While I was swimming yesterday, I completely lost track of where I was in my program — twice! — while doing my swim-math. It was then that I realized it was time to get out of my head, stop counting, and be in my body. To really enjoy my swim. To feel the water gliding across my body, to see the sun’s shimmering reflections and my shadow on the bottom of the pool, to enjoy the pleasant sensation of stretching my body out and the vigorous feeling of exercising my muscles. Suddenly I found that I was swimming more effortlessly too. I had no problem with keeping track of where I was in my program and I was truly enjoying every moment of my swim. Ahhhh. I was living my life, being aware of and making every moment count, rather than counting out the past and enumerating the future.

As I mention in my book Active Consciousness, it is really those rare moments when we are truly in the Now that we remember best in life. They might be cherished memories of one-ness with nature or peak moments of experience in our lives — a graduation, a birth, a death. The true experience of the Now is also a reason why people are drawn to extreme sports. You can’t think about the past or the future when you are flinging your body off a bridge or hanging on to a rock face for dear life. As Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner said about his recent record-breaking jump to Earth from a helium balloon hovering at the edge of space, “When I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble, you do not think about breaking records anymore, you do not think about gaining scientific data. The only thing you want is to come back alive.”

Of course, you don’t need to go to such extremes to be in the Now. You can do it right now as you’re sitting in your chair reading this newsletter. You can make this moment count, instead of counting off your moments. Just settle into your body and feel the sensation of being alive!
